How to Find Strength in Vulnerability

After my umpteenth heartbreak, I devoted myself to a life of self-sustainability. When we’re in relationships we can become co-dependent, and when those relationships end, it feels like we have to learn how to put ourself first again. There’s no one to talk about your day to, no one you have to run important life decisions by, no one to take into consideration anymore. At first this is the loneliest shit ever, but eventually you get the hang of it, and you see the benefits of it. For me, it got to the point where I cringed at the idea of getting close to anyone. I justified this by saying I was a free spirit, and had better things...

We're Either Making Progress or Excuses..

We can read motivational quotes forever, but unless we make the decision to start before we feel ready, we’re not going to make much progress. I’ve been there, in bed 18 hours a day, hoping my problems would figure themselves out, or someone would come save the day and be my hero. As we grow from children to adults, we not only have to be more independent, we also have to let go of the idea that anyone else is going to make our problems theirs. More About Mama and Papa Poet..

Mama Poet & Papa Poet being too cute right now.. In 2012, I got a rare opportunity to have my parents meet their childhood hero Dharmendra. Over the years, I've been able to make other cool things happen for them, not just to help them live a life they've dreamed of, but to also encourage them to dream more and add more to their bucket lists. Like many immigrants, my parents’ goals were simple and straightforward, and involved providing for their children. Now that we're all set, they don't naturally turn off the immigrant...

What is Confidence?

Confidence isn't thinking we're better than other people (that's cockiness), it's understanding that no one else is any better than us. Many people think we're born confident, or it's something we can turn on, but really it's something we develop over time. Imagine you had to do a speech in front of 100,000 people, it'd obviously be a daunting task, and you'll probably be nervous. Now imagine, instead of a speech, you just had to recite the alphabet. Although you may still be nervous, you'll be a lot less nervous, because your foundation is stronger, because you've practiced the alphabet a million times. That's confidence in a nutshell. The more you practice something, the more confident you'll be doing...

The Truth About Chasing Happiness

Chasing happiness is played out. If you’re old enough to read this then you've been around long enough to see that life isn't like the movies, there's no ‘happily ever after’. One problem gets solved, and another one gets created, and that's okay; the invention of the ship was also the invention of the shipwreck. If you want to strive for something that's attainable, strive for a life that exists on your own terms. This life won't protect you from heartbreak or struggle, but it will put you in a spot where you'll have the tools to address them, and be better for doing so. Once we escape the clutches and expectations of others, we'll realize that we had...
