International Women's Day

International Women's Day

I’m part of some underrepresented groups but, as a straight guy, I’m also part of a majority. It’s easy to point out when people don’t relate to us, but it’s challenging to call ourselves out when our privilege is showing.
As a guy, I don’t always get the female experience; I look at it through my limited lens and then have uninformed judgements. I don’t know what it feels like to be a woman in a male-dominated world just as much as those women don’t know what it feels like to be me at the airport. The goal isn’t to compete with our traumas and decide who has it harder; instead, the goal should be to use our shared experiences to build empathy towards those we have the least in common with.
Women have been the majority of my teachers, even outside the classroom, and instead of acting like a faux-feminist, I can honour their impact on me by working even harder to listen and learn from them. From the outside, the female experience seems complex and challenging, and that is the recipe for strength, wisdom and resilience.
Salute to all the wonderful women on #internationalwomensday, thank you for your essential energy, love and existence. To my fellow guys, remember that honouring a woman’s strength and awesomeness doesn’t diminish your own. #BLESS #IWD2020
